Let’s Hit the Road!
I’ve been with Nussbaum for nearly four years. Until now, my only experience in a truck was riding along for a new hire road test. To say I was chomping at the bit to get back in the truck is an understatement! I was eager to experience a typical day with one of our drivers. Why, you ask? Moving to the safety department opened my eyes to how ignorant I was about the life of a truck driver. From managing HOS to doing a thorough post-trip to close the day, drivers must pay serious attention to detail in every aspect of the job. Realizing how much I didn’t know made me want to learn more.
On the Road with Sergio
I got to spend the day with Sergio Cortez – he’s a regional driver whose been with us for over ten years. We stayed mostly within 40 miles of Nussbaum, visiting Oakley Sub Assembly in Normal, Orbis RPM in Bartonville, and finishing the day at Orbis in Decatur. From morning to evening, I was in the passenger seat soaking up Sergio’s 20+ years of driving experience! Also, just getting to know him personally. Sergio is a great teacher. He was so accommodating and constantly told me, “You’re the guest” and made me feel special. Sergio showed me what it means to be a professional Nussbaum driver: communication (with coworkers and customers), safe driving, and demonstrating good character to everyone you encounter. Those were some of the highlights for me.
Get a Glimpse
I truly enjoyed the day with Sergio – a great learning experience for me! If you’ve been considering a ride-along, I encourage you to take full advantage of it. It was a privilege to get just a small glimpse into everything our drivers do to keep Nussbaum rolling.
Great article!
