National Hobby Month // Week 1
Welcome to Week 1 of January, National Hobby Month. Can you believe that the people you work with build motorcycles, fight competitively, and are self-taught graphic design artists? And that’s just naming a few.
Check out what we’re up to when we’re not in a truck or office chair.
Zach Schildt – “My favorite thing to do when I am not driving is drive my car to the places I go past when I’m working. This is my girlfriend of five years, Catherine, and I somewhere in San Antonio, TX. We love to travel together. Eventually, she has plans to find some time to ride in the truck with me. We had a wonderful time together, and the food was delicious!”
Doyle Chester – “My side hobby (or what I enjoy doing when I’m not driving) is playing around with graphic design. I design my own merch/t-shirts/stickers/etc., and I’m self-taught with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. I’ve been wanting to design a Nussbaum trucker t-shirt (design approved, of course).”
Jared Fehr – “What I love about skiing, four-wheeling, and water sports is the intensity, but also the ability to explore and enjoy the outdoors. Pretty much if it’s outdoors and has an engine, adrenaline, scenery, or some combination of those things, I am in!”
Justin Worden – “Here in our house, I and my three daughters like to build and fly remote control planes. Our biggest has an 11-foot wingspan and weighs 45 pounds. It’s helpful to have three creative minds in the house.”
Bill Wettstein – “I grew up on a John Deere 4020 that my father owned, and this past year I bought a 1969 model year 4020 that had been sitting in a shed for years. When we went to look at it, we struggled to start it, and when it did start, it leaked diesel all over, and the clutch was frozen up. It would not move an inch. I bought it anyway. My brother restored it to good running condition. Sometimes, I just can’t stop grinning when I am on it. Something about a loud tractor and a little black smoke…”
Paige Wood – “I’ve been riding horses since I was 10. I love their honesty and the freedom they give me when I’m riding. The gray horse, Blu, and I were show partners for over ten years. He took care of me while I was learning and always brought me home with blue ribbons. The bay horse, Sam, and I do more trail riding, working cows, and teaching my almost 2-year-old, Laith the ropes.”
Garrie Atkins – “My hobby for 18 years in dispatch.”
Jason Buga – “I enjoy building and riding motorcycles. This is the bike I’m most proud of. I have been doing this in my spare time for 20 years. I decided to keep this one for myself.”
Oscar Flores – “For the past 12 years, I have been training in mixed martial arts. I started when I was 16 years old to continue to stay fit during the off-season for football. Once I was old enough to enter the ring, I fell in love with the sport and continued to learn and grow. I have seven wins and two losses in my amateur career in the octagon. None of my fights ever went to decision, always TKO or KO. I currently help teach new students at Brands Martial Arts in Fairbury in Kickboxing and Karate. I am a brown belt in Karate and currently working on my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo. What I love about MMA are the family and friends I build along the way. I’ve had the honor to meet several UFC fighters such as Matt Hughes, Shonie Carter, Clay Guida, Josh Emmett, and several others. I plan on continuing to grow as a fighter and a student, and I will pass this on to my daughter.”
Saige Anderson – “There is nothing better than exploring the outdoors and taking a nap out in the sun while you’re hammocking. I love resting with the sun shining on me. All you need is fresh air, a good book, and a few trees! I would call my hobby simply enjoying the fruits of nature.”
