Heather Barkey
“Heather Barkey was driving down the highway when she noticed a semi truck flipped on its side, smoke pouring out. There were no cars stopped or any people helping the situation that she noticed, so Heather pulled over and carefully made her way across the highway towards the scene. As she approached, there was a strong smell of fuel and oil, and she could see it leaking out of the tanks. Heather dialed 911 and after assessing the situation further, realized the driver was still inside the cab, stuck. She happened to have a mag flashlight in hand and was able to beat the window until it busted open. The driver was able to kick the glass the rest of the way out and get out. He was shaken up but okay. He told Heather that all he had seen were lights passing him by–he didn’t think anyone was going to stop, and he couldn’t find his phone to call for help. Heather waited on the scene with him until more help arrived, and was able to continue on her route. I wanted to nominate Heather for an OWNit moment for her efforts in helping this driver. She probably saved his life!” – Crystal Baldwin
