Focus on the Family

A Benevolence Highlight

Focus on the Family is a Christian non-profit ministry based in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Their mission is “sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with as many people as possible by nurturing and defending the God-ordained institution of the family and promoting biblical truths worldwide.” The ministry is built upon six guiding philosophies:

  • The Preeminence of Evangelism.
  • The Permanence of Marriage.
  • The Value of Children.
  • The Sanctity of Human Life.
  • The Importance of Social Responsibility.
  • The Value of Male and Female.

Since opening in 1977, FOTF’s ministry efforts have grown to include various broadcasts, podcasts, telecasts, films, websites, blogs, and radio dramas. These outlets feature information, guidance, and practical insights on family-focused topics such as adoption, marriage, media discernment, and pastoral concerns.

Here’s a few programs you may recognize: Wait No More (foster care & adoption), Adventures in Odyssey (stories that bring moral and biblical principles to life), The Boundless Show (encouragement for intentional living in the single years), Clubhouse and Clubhouse Jr. (A fun website for kids that reinforces traditional values), Hope Restored (a marriage intensive experience), and Plugged In (provides movie, music, book, and video game reviews).

History

The organization began with one man – Dr. James Dobson. In 1976, Dobson requested a one-year leave of absence from his job at Children’s Hospital to start Focus on the Family. In March of the following year, FOTF released its first broadcast, “Let’s Get Acquainted,” beginning a weekly program on 40 stations. In 1980, they expanded to a 15-minute daily program and again in 1981 to a 30-minute program.

In 1983, FOTF released its first edition of Focus on the Family Magazine, featuring practical advice about family relationships. By 1986, the magazine had topped one million in circulation. In 1989, Jim Daly started his career at Focus as Assistant to the President in Public Affairs. In 1990, the first episode of Adventures in Odyssey aired on 200 stations and the foundation moved its headquarters to Colorado Springs. In 2000, Focus on the Family Radio Theatre, a weekly radio drama for families, arrived on the airwaves.

A Beacon on a Hill

Through the years, Focus on the Family has inspired and encouraged families worldwide. This testimony says it well: “Throughout my active parenting years, I relied on Focus radio broadcasts for encouragement, guidance, and information. My sons heard probably every Adventures in Odyssey and Radio Theatre broadcast. Even though my sons are on their own and raising their children, I still listen to Odyssey and Radio Theatre. My grandchildren are now reading Clubhouse Jr. with their parents. I have also been encouraged by the free access to the other programs on the Focus@Home website. I’m very excited that this has encouraged one of my daughters-in-law to access Focus resources during the COVID crisis…thank you for your ministry and for carrying on Dr. Dobson’s call and vision! May you continue to spread the Gospel of Jesus to families!”
