Focus on ABS & Cargo Securement
International Road Check will take place May 16 – 18. This year’s vehicle focus will be on ABS & Cargo Securement. During the International Roadcheck, inspectors will primarily conduct the North American Level 1 Inspection. For the complete 37-step inspection list, click here.
Anti-lock Braking System
According to the CVSA, “ABS violations are not out-of-service violations; however, the ABS plays a critical role in reducing collisions. A properly functioning ABS will prevent wheels from locking up or skidding, allowing a driver to maintain vehicle control while braking. Drivers must observe the diagnostic check during pre-and post-trip inspections to ensure the ABS functions properly. ABS lamps that fail to illuminate during the diagnostic check, or lamps that remain illuminated while in transit, indicate an ABS malfunction that must be repaired.”
What to Expect During ABS Inspection:
- Inspectors will determine whether ABS is required on the vehicle
- Ensure the ABS lamp cycles on and off during the diagnostic check
- Check for indications of ABS malfunction, such as lamps remaining on during transit
Cargo Securement
Have you ever been on the highway and had to swerve quickly to avoid a large piece of furniture that fell off a truck? Now, think about the hazards of a Semi-truck losing its cargo! Improper cargo securement is dangerous as it may adversely affect the vehicle’s maneuverability. Drivers should verify proper securement and inspect tie-downs during their pre-and post-trip inspections and periodically during their trip to ensure the cargo remains secure.
What to Expect During Cargo Inspection:
- Ensure spare tires, loads, cargo and dunnage are secured and prevented from falling, blowing, spilling or leaking from the vehicle, or rolling or shifting in transit.
- Confirm there are enough tie-downs for the weight an length of the items being transported.
- Check for defective securement devices (e.g., loose, torn, damaged, bent, knotted tiedowns).
- Inspect anchor points and structures for damage.
- Verify commodity-specific cargo is secured in accordance with the regulations
Be Prepared
In 2022, over the three days of International Roadcheck, CVSA-certified inspectors conducted 59,026 inspections and placed 12,456 commercial motor vehicles and 3,714 commercial motor vehicle drivers out of service.
