Wellness Wednesday: Caring for Your Physical and Mental Health at Work

May is both Employee Health & Fitness Month and Mental Health Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to focus on how our daily work routines impact how we feel, physically and mentally.

Mental health at work doesn’t mean eliminating stress completely. Instead, it’s about finding small, manageable ways to care for yourself during the workday, even on busy days.

WHY MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS AT WORK

Our mental well‑being affects focus, decision‑making, safety, and overall job satisfaction. Small habits throughout the day can help reduce tension, improve mood, and prevent burnout over time.

Even light movement can:

  • Improve circulation
  • Increase alertness
  • Lower stress levels

The key is consistency — not intensity.

SIMPLE MENTAL WELLNESS TIPS YOU CAN USE RIGHT AT WORK

Whether you’re at a desk, workstation, or in a truck, these quick ideas can fit into nearly any schedule:

  • Pause and breathe: Take 5 slow breaths before starting a task or getting back on the road. Deep breathing helps calm the nervous system.
  • Shoulder & neck release: Roll your shoulders, gently tilt your head side‑to‑side, or shrug and release tension.
  • Change your view: Look away from screens or the road for 20–30 seconds when safely stopped. Focusing on something distant gives your eyes and brain a break.
  • Hydration check: Drinking water regularly can improve focus and reduce fatigue.
  • Positive reset: Take a second to acknowledge one thing that went well, even something small.

REMEMBER

Taking a short break, stretching, or stepping away for a moment is not a sign of weakness, it’s a way to work smarter and safer.

Let’s use this month to stay active, stay aware, and support one another in creating healthier workdays!
