Back in my recruiting days, Rex Schroeder dropped off a stained and decaying 3×5 notecard on my desk. He said the card collected a coffee spill and then traveled to his shirt pocket, where it lived for a month. Beneath the splotchy stains was a name and phone number of someone interested in driving at Nussbaum.
I gave Rex an apologetic, weak smile and said I would do my best to give the name on it a call.
The Right Place
Looks can be deceiving. The name on that card was David Wahls. And on September 9, he will celebrate his one-year anniversary at Nussbaum. I called him the other day to ask how he is fairing, and he shared some poetic words.
“I haven’t had a smile on my face working like this before.”
“I am not in want.”
“I enjoy spending time in the yard. Drivers want to talk to one another. When we see each other on the road, we wave. It is different here.”
I called Rex too.
“Since Nussbaum is the first place I have driven, I have nothing to compare it against. Other drivers tell me all the time, ‘WELL, YOU CAME TO THE RIGHT PLACE FIRST!’”
“I did my research on Nussbaum, and it was the only place I came across where the drivers didn’t bash on the company.”
True Worth
All in all, you never know what difference you could make by striking up a conversation with someone. Referrals can happen organically, and they can really make a difference.
Rex Schroeder made $3,000 off his coffee-stained notecard, but I think a content man happy with his work is worth even more. Happy almost one-year Anniversary, David!
